Bataan and the Bataan Death March Reading and Viewing List

Realizing the futility of continued resistance, Maj. Gen. Edward King, commander of forces on Bataan after MacArthur was ordered to leave, surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942 (the island of Corregidor held out until May 6). Although General King surrendered his force to save them from unnecessary suffering, the brutality of their Japanese captors killed thousands of the POWs in what became known as the Bataan Death March.

"For the first time in 12 years, no American military forces are in Vietnam. All of our American POW's are on their way home. The 17 million people of South Vietnam have the right to choose their own government without outside interference, and because of our program of Vietnamization, they have the strength to defend that right. We have prevented the imposition of a Communist government by force on South Vietnam."

Soon after his address, reports started circulating, questioning whether all of the POWs had been released.
